AFP Laboratory

Maternal serum and amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) measurements are widely used for screening pregnancies for the presence of neural tube defects. Amniotic fluid analysis is usually recommended when maternal serum AFP levels remain elevated after repeat analysis and cannot be explained by clinical or ultrasound examination. We provide AFP and acetylcholinesterase (ACHE) analysis of amniotic fluid samples.

Alpha-fetoprotein
Sample requirement: 1.0 ml of amniotic fluid. Normal values: 0.5-2.0 multiples of the median for gestational age.

Test report: Abnormal results are phoned and/or faxed. Turnaround time: 2-3 days.

Acetylcholinesterase
Sample requirement: 1.0 ml of amniotic fluid. Normal values: Test result is reported as normal (negative) or abnormal (positive) for inhibitable ACHE.

Test report: Abnormal results are phoned and/or faxed.
Turnaround time: 3-7 days.
